A downloadable game

Background

I enjoyed playing this original puzzle game by orion_black that finished 12th in the recent Ludum Dare 52 game jam, and thought it would be interesting to try and convert it to the C64. This took about 10 hours in total.

Due to the need for smooth scrolling, the entire game board is comprised of multiplexed sprites, meaning at any one time there are up to 78 sprites visible on screen.

-----------------------------------------------

How To Play

Harvest fruit as fast possible to score points and prevent them leaving the top of the screen. Each time a fruit leaves the screen the row is cleared but a life is lost.

Matching fruits can be harvested in pairs horizontally, vertically, or diagonally by selecting them with the cursor and pressing fire.

However, they can only be cleared if they are either next to each other or there is clear space between them.

After 8 pairs are cleared, the level (and speed) increases.

Clearing an entire row of fruit will move all fruit above it down one row.

-----------------------------------------------

Controls

  • Joystick direction  - Move Cursor
  • Fire - Select Fruit
  • Hold Fire - Speed up scrolling

-----------------------------------------------

Scoring

  • 5 points per pair cleared
  • 3 points per square in between the cleared pair vertically or horizontally
  • 5 points per square in between cleared pair diagonally
  • 1, 2, 4 or 8 bonus points for clearing different fruits consecutively

Very nice game! Our German-language review can be found in our recorded livestream starting at 01:35:03. Automatic subtitles should be available soon (switch on, if necessary). Subscription to our Twitch channel is welcome. 🙂

Another winner!

Awesome Arlasoft ! Congrats.

great work! what a fun little game, love the concept.

Very fun game. I guess the engine can be easily re-worked to make similar games like "Chain Factor"/"Drop 7" and the like

Possibly, the limitation with this sprite-only engine would be having tiles in between rows. I have tile-based engines from the likes of Pillars or 20 which might be more suited to that sort of game.

Makes sense. I guess Hyper Harvest only works because all the tiles are aligned horizontally on the same raster line. As soon as you have a single dropping tile it would be problematic.

+ Fun, great music, nice graphics!

- Incredibly stressful, and hard to control with joystick. This game would be a lot better with the option of keyboard steering, preferrable with 8 keys + fire.

10 hours to write? Some going.. what are you writing in Assembler or TRSE?

Assembler - had plenty of practice over the past 3 years so I kind of get in the zone and don't have to think too much about what I'm doing.

nice work - you've definitely got the knack for it, the amount of work you turn out in a short space of time is pretty impressive.

Nice game!

gracias
