@CJ Warlock: Thanks for trying it out and commenting! The upcoming beta still has its problems, but I'm happy to report that it remembers the directory, and also loads stuff a lot faster, esp. with a disk turbo module.

In the alpha you can also press , and . (dot and comma) to change the tempo with one-CIA-cycle accuracy ;-).

Observation: reloading the DIR is not necessary each time. It only slows down the selection of the tune. DIR should be reloaded only if disc has been changed (or at a manual request). Otherwise, the list of the tunes should be kept in memory for fast access to the selection menu. I hope this remark helps Deetsay in the development of a yet nicer to use tool. :) Cheers. :)

A very nice and interesting tool. Definitely worth developing it further. I like the idea. It was about time someone coded it. :D I like the pitcher's value accuracy (2 digits after a decimal point). Setting a desired BPM value however is kinda uncomfortable, because it requires turning it up and down a bit a few times to set the exact desired value. Overall, this tool has a great potential. Thank you, Deetsay. Cheers! :)

Yep, two computers and a mixer would probably be the typical setup (like with PT-1210). Playing two standard SID files at the same time on the same computer would be a challenge, maybe not impossible (if they're not overlapping in memory) but likely a very different piece of software with a completely different UI and its own limitations.

Question: Maybe I'm no DJ/CJ, but I assume it requires two instances of this tool (or two C64s if you're real hardcore ;)) to transition between two playing SID tunes for now? Or is there something I'm missing here? ... what about transitioning through two tunes via one playing through a 2nd SID chip and vice versa?

If you want to be first, you have a couple of days to master it ;-). I will be playing with this vs. PT-1210 under my super secret hidden identity Pekka Pou / dA JoRMaS! on Tuesday at Assembly Winter Tracker Night. I was going to release it right after that, but it was just too much to hold it in!

Awesome work! Some of the features here is something I would really liked seen built into Sidplay, but seeing it on a real machine is just wow!

DS/DJ-2000 mk1 is a DJ-player software for SID-files. It was first inspired on social media where someone wished for a native SID player that could mute channels. And then it grew from there, and obviously took a lot of inspiration from PT-1210 on the Amiga. This is a barely usable alpha version. It is headed for a major rewrite, but I wanted to share it as it is now!

All comments and ideas are welcome, but I'm not really looking for "bug reports" regarding SID-file compatibility, or graphics glitches, or massive crashes, which you will run into. The "beta version" is going to be very largely rewritten anyway.

F3/F5 : Tempo, hold C= to make tempo temporary
F1/F7 : RWD/FWD, shift+F7 FFWD
Cursor Right/Down : Nudge/Wink
1/2/3 : Mute
T : "Speedbase" used for calculating BPM and loop size
Q : Cue, shift+Q set cue
Z : Jump to green marker
L : Loop, shift+L loop size
F : Filter adjust, paddle 1 = amount
Space : Run/Stop
Run/Stop : Back to song select

The player is located at $b800-$d000 and the SID data dump loop is located around $e000-$ff00. If a SID-file does anything to those regions then it won't work. There are a million other reasons why a SID-file wouldn't work, such as if it changes the I/O area visibility or does things with the CIAs. Anything with samples is out of the question.

Don't get too comfortable with the key assignments, they are very likely to change. Need to figure things out so they would be usable in different computer orientations...

Known issues:
- Graphic glitches everywhere, sprites and extra characters messing up the disk menu
- Crashes on loading a new SID way too often
- Using the loop and changing the length or speedbase often ends up with the pointer sprite going out of control!

Possible future developments:
- The BPM display does not match either Protracker or any real DJ equipment. Both options should be available in the future.
- Pitch and related effects, scratching with a paddle!
- Automatically relocating player and loop
- Loading is very slow, so maybe it would make some sense to use a loader framework, even if that would mean non-standard files pre-prepared on a PC. That should also allow for pre-configuring cue points and speedbase settings though.
- On the other hand, a multi-megabyte REU or EasyFlash image could store complete SID dumps of songs, which should allow better fast-forwarding and rewinding, and lots of cue points. Options shall be investigated!
- Some kind of minimal "player-only" mode for playing incompatible samplestuffs (without the DJ-features)
