The ZIP file seems to contain only the D64 file, and no instructions, so I really struggled with the interface and gameplay. Apparently I'm supposed to piece some blue ships together, but what then?

I assume it's an implementation of the traditional Battleship game.

Well, yeah. But am I the blue player or the red player? I can set up ships, but what do I do next? How do I take shots? What do the numbers along the top and sides mean? What does the fire button do when it leaves behind a checkered pattern? What do F1 and F7 do? What do the parts of red ships scattered around the board mean? What's the chart of ship parts in the lower-right corner for? I have millions of questions, apparently, but no idea how to actually play this game.

It is a variant of Picross I think, unlock the logic of intersecting row and column count to locate the pieces and by working out the size and orientation you should know whether to place, Bow, middle, stern etc.

Try load"$",8 - the instructions are on the disk too ;-)

......one year later!!!

Although the instructions were on the disk, this seemed to confuse people as to what the game actually was.
Vic-20-Ian was correct about it being a 'Pic-Cross' type puzzle.

This was a popular puzzle printed in some UK newspapers, along with sudoku and the like. The puzzle was named 'Battleships'. I knew that this would not be a great thing to call my offering, as it is not the traditional game, so decided to call it 'VICSHIPS' to avoid confusion (which didn't work ). Seemed like a good idea at the time. Perhaps I should have called it 'PICSHIPS' instead.

There were, however, a couple of bugs in the original posting. These have been corrected and the game now works as expected. Also included the instructions as a text file for convenience.

Original file replaced with working version.
