Sonic the Hedgehog for C64/128 + REU

Post by mrsid »

We're proud to announce Sonic the Hedgehog for Commodore 64/128 + REU (PAL and NTSC).

This is the first game that has exclusively been designed for the REU, to make a fast and smooth full-screen scrolling version of Sonic with little compromises.
This game is a direct port of the SEGA Master System 8-Bit version of Sonic the Hedgehog, with about 64 KB of code hand-translated from the Z80 to the 6502 architecture.

The game will be released as a free download on December 19th, 2021.
It requires a C64 or C128 (in C64 mode), a compatible REU of at least 256 KB, a compatible drive (.d64 and .d81 images will be provided) and any joystick or gamepad (no extra buttons required). On NTSC, a C128 or other CPU accelerator is highly recommended.

In the mean time, here's a trailer and some screenshots:

This is really cool. The music seems sluggish and slow to me, but then I live in NTSC-land, not PAL-land.

Wow. Another first for me. I never ever did play Super Mario Bros on the NES. Don't think I ever did see a Nintendo console before the SNES. I just to hang with a DJ at a clubhouse back in the day and I remember watching gameplay of Sonic on a Sega console, but I'm sure I didn't play myself. I do recognize the music though and I must say it sounds even better with the SID. Looking forward to play this. I guess it will work fine with my SCPU.
NUMBERS; Blood's clones. There are 5 of them: Number 1, Number 2, Number 3, Number 4 and that son of a bitch Number 5...

This is playable on Emulators, yes. We testet this on various platforms like VICE, U64, real hardware with Classic Commodore REU, 1541U I/II/II+ and it should also work on the Turbo Chameleon.

OMG never could I have thought this would ever be possible or be done! Just incredible after SMB now Sonic on the old C64!

Some observations:
- SEEEEEEEEEEGAAAAAAAAA startup logo
- will there be sound effects? Is it just for the video that they're not there?
- REU is cool, but maybe a .crt version for using with the U2+ could be handy as well? (nvm I guess the REU is needed if I'm understanding things correctly)
